Solutions Journalism: Training Conservationists Behind Bars

Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., needed more conservationists to study threatened species of frogs and wild moss. It found its experts behind bars. The college and the Washington State Department of Corrections partnered to create the Sustainability in Prisons Project, which educates the incarcerated in ecology and engages them through active conservation efforts that turn them into scientists.

Long ignored by city government, residents of the low-income, largely immigrant Houston neighborhood of East Aldine are organizing to meet their own needs.
