CAMPUS SAFETY [One Person Is Arrested After Jewish Students Are Attacked With a Bottle at Pitt]( The suspect has no known affiliation with the campus, University of Pittsburgh officials said. The students, who were wearing Jewish skullcaps while walking on the campus on Friday night, suffered “superficial lacerations” from the broken bottle. According to the criminal complaint, the suspect was wearing a keffiyeh, a symbol of the Palestinian cause. (NBC News) CAMPUS CLIMATE [Education Dept. Resolves Antisemitism Complaint at U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign]( According to the department’s Office for Civil Rights, the university [inadequately responded]( to 135 reported incidents of antisemitic bias and four of anti-Muslim, anti-Palestinian, or anti-Arab bias from 2015 through 2023, in particular whether they cumulatively created a hostile climate. The university [pledged]( to improve the coordination and consistency of its response. (Department statements) ACCOUNTABILITY [Michigan State U. Paid Millions to Feds After Flubbing Post-Nassar Oversight]( The university paid the U.S. Education Department almost $3 million in July because it had not respected rules on federal oversight after the [Larry Nassar scandal](. Under the rules, MSU must get federal approval for new academic programs, among other things, a result of its failure to respond to the former university doctor’s sexual abuse of hundreds of women.
