New enrollments will be halted in the programs, but the affected students will be able to complete their degrees. Some faculty cuts are expected, but Valparaiso did not specify a number. Is Hacked by Ransomware Group Demanding $700,000]( The public university, which has [faced]( a [host]( of recent [financial problems]( said the cyberattack had resulted in the theft of students’ and employees’ Social Security, bank-account, charge-card, and driver’s-license numbers. Thousands of people could be affected. The university did not say if it planned to pay the ransom, which is due by Saturday. (The Jersey Journal, The Chronicle) FACULTY [U. of Iowa Settles With Tenured Professor Over Unspecified ‘Internal Proceedings’]( The university will pay Kaikobad Irani, a lab director and cardiologist, $350,000 to resign by August 31 and will suspend “any internal proceedings” involving him. The agreement also specifies what will happen with his lab’s federal research funding, including if it needs to be paid back. The settlement also says neither Irani nor the university admits wrongdoing.
