CAMPUS UNREST I [13 Arrested at Stanford as Pro-Palestinian Protesters Occupy Presidentâs Office]( The university said 13 students had been arrested this morning by the local and campus police after an occupation of less than two hours. Stanford also said there had been âextensive damageâ to the building, apparently a reference in part to extensive spray-painted graffiti. A protester said the painting [had not been planned]( by organizers. (Los Angeles Times, The Stanford Daily) CAMPUS UNREST II [Pro-Palestinian Protest at Pitt Ends Without Incident After Local Politicians Step In]( The mayor of Pittsburgh and the county executive of Allegheny County, Pa., spoke with protesters who had barricaded the universityâs iconic Cathedral of Learning, leading to fears that a confrontation with the police was imminent. The university has said the protesters âwere largely unaffiliatedâ with Pitt, but they âself-identifiedâ as students and faculty members. (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) CAMPUS UNREST III [Sonoma State U. Walks Back Ousted Presidentâs Deal With Pro-Palestinian Protesters]( The agreement reached last month by Ming-Tung (Mike) Lee led to his being put on leave by the California State University system and then to his retirement. Lee was among several presidents to [run into trouble]( for making deals to end protests peacefully. The acting president issued a new plan last week that âsupersedes previous university communications.â (The Press Democrat, The Chronicle) TROUBLED INSTITUTION [Upheaval Continues at Philadelphiaâs U. of the Arts, as President Resigns]( On Tuesday, the same day Kerry Walk quit, nearby Temple University offered a possible merger. Walk, president for less than a year, announced suddenly last week that the university would close this coming Friday because of falling enrollment and an unspecified financial crisis. That prompted its accreditor to yank recognition immediately. (The Philadelphia Inquirer) CAMPUS SAFETY [Columbia U. Settles Lawsuit With Jewish Student in Wake of Protests]( The university has agreed to provide students with safe passage on campus as part of a settlement of a Jewish studentâs lawsuit. The unnamed plaintiff sued on behalf of students who in April shifted to online instruction over fears for their safety prompted by [pro-Palestinian protests](. The [protests]( drew [national attention]( before being [crushed by the police](. (The Washington Post, The Chronicle) PUBLICATIONS [After Publishing Article Critical of Israel, Columbia Law Reviewâs Website Is Shut Down]( The student-run journal on Monday published the article, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and maintaining an apartheid regime. The journalâs Board of Directors, comprising faculty members and alumni of the universityâs law school, then took the website offline. The student editors said the board had violated their editorial independence.
