The raid late Thursday stemmed from a new encampment by a splinter group of protesters, and exacerbated a tense situation in which a UC union has [threatened to strike](. (The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Chronicle) CAMPUS UNREST II [Chicago Police Clear Out Pro-Palestinian Encampment and Arrest 2 at DePaul U.]( The police raid early Thursday followed what the university’s president described as “good-faith efforts” to reach an agreement with the protesters. He also said the protests had attracted violent threats by outsiders, impeded DePaul operations, and antagonized the university’s neighbors. Protesters were allowed to leave without being arrested. (WLS) THE ALTERNATIVE [Chapman U. and Protesters Reach Agreement to Dismantle Gaza Solidarity Encampment]( Under the deal, the protest will end today, before the start of commencement weekend at the private university in the Los Angeles area. No students in the protest will face discipline, and they will make a presentation on divestment from Israel before the university board’s investment committee in September, after which the panel will vote on their proposal. (Daily Bulletin) A DIFFICULT CROSSING [Texas A&M U. at Galveston Relocates Students After Barge Crash Damages Bridge]( The campus will be closed to nonessential personnel until at least Sunday, [the university said]( as the bridge — the only link with the outside world — remains possibly unsafe. It was not clear how many students and employees remained on the campus, as the spring semester ended this month. (The Daily News, university website) CAMPUS CUTS [Faculty Leaders Are Concerned as U. of Southern Maine Eliminates 5 Positions]( The cuts affect directors of advising, graduate students, and student engagement and leadership, as well as a program that offers smaller classes and mentoring to some freshmen and transfer students. The university cited budget challenges. The faculty critics said the Faculty Senate should have been consulted in the decision.
