(San Antonio Express-News, The Chronicle) TITLE IX VIOLATIONS [Maryland University Failed to Respond to Alleged Sexual Abuse by Former Swim Coach]( According to an [investigative report]( by the U.S. Justice Department, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County knew about but ignored alleged sexual harassment of male athletes and discrimination against female athletes by Chad Cradock, who coached until 2020 and died in 2021. The university pledged reforms. (WJZ) CURRICULUM [Brigham Young U. Will Require Students to Read Controversial ‘Musket Fire’ Speech]( Starting in the winter-2024 semester, the Utah university, run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will require freshmen to take a course that includes, among other readings, a speech in which a former BYU president calls on Mormons to defend the church’s teachings with “musket fire.” LGBTQ students say the speech incites violence and hatred against them. (NBC News) CAMPUS CUTS [Marquette U. Plans to Cut $31 Million by 2031]( The Roman Catholic university in Wisconsin said it needed to reduce its spending by some 7 percent and rethink its program offerings, among other steps, to balance its students’ increased need for financial aid. The university also said it would “reinvest” 40 percent of the $31 million into other priorities identified in its strategic plan.
