Reflections on the art market for 2023 | [View in browser]( [Christie's]( [A Message from Guillaume Cerutti Christie’s Chief Executive Officer] As we begin 2023, I would like to share with you a quick look back over the last year and a few thoughts for the months ahead. 2022 was an historic year for Christie’s. We achieved our highest ever global sales of $8.4Bn, with several landmarks, in particular the memorable sales of the [Paul G. Allen Collection]( and Andy Warhol’s [Shot Sage Blue Marilyn]( the most valuable 20th-century artwork ever sold at auction. Our business grew in every category and in every region. We are also thrilled to be welcoming new buyers into the market, with 35% of all buyers in 2022 being new to Christie's, and a third of them being millennials. I would like to thank every one of our clients in 2022. Thank you for trusting us with your consignments and thank you for purchasing with us. As we look forward to this year, we are confident that the art market will continue to demonstrate resiliency. The global demand for great works of art and luxury goods will remain strong. Our presence around the world and the diversity of services we offer to our clients (including auctions, digital platforms, private sales and financial services) will allow Christie's to satisfy this demand. But we remain vigilant for ongoing macro-economic challenges. In this context, we will continue to prioritise our focus on offering quality works and collections, deploying our leading expertise in all fields and recommending to our clients the optimum sale strategy to deliver successful outcomes. We will apply these principles most imminently with our [Classic Week]( in New York in January. We had successes with Decorative Arts and Old Master works last year, and we expect a strong start in 2023. Next week, we will present important Old Masters, including a [pair of portraits by Goya]( and a selection of paintings from the [collection of J.E. Safra]( which will be offered to bidders without reserve price. We are also delighted to present our [Exceptional]( [Antiquities]( and [Modern Medici]( sales. Star lots range from a [Giacomo Raffaelli hardstone inlaid table]( to '[The Last Spike]( commemorating the joining of the world’s first transcontinental railroad. Finally, in beginning a new year, I believe it is essential that we acknowledge the significant challenges that continue to be weathered around the world, impacting so many with uncertainties, hardships, struggles and fears, but which at the same time show people’s extraordinary strength and courage. As we did in 2022, we will look for every available opportunity to give back through philanthropy and vital cultural and social support. It is our responsibility to do so. From me, and from all at Christie’s, very best wishes for a happy and healthy 2023.
