A Noble/Nobel Doctor | A Liberal Case for 'Blue Laws' | 'Jesus Has This Effect on Dead People' | [View online]( [Give Now]( Advertisement [The Galli Report]( [Home]( [Podcast]( [Subscribe]( Friday, October 12, 2018 Taking the Nation’s Pulse It’s racing, with high blood pressure to boot. A little over a year ago, we were rightly anxious about the violence of the alt-right. This week it was the radical left that threatened violence—see [here]( and [here]( for two articles that pointed this out (fair warning, some language in the videos is offensive). I thought [this piece]( did better than most (that is, the author tries to calmly discuss matters, rather than throwing around heated rhetoric) at trying to parse a number of things said during the Kavanaugh hearings, because in the heat of that long moment, some odd things were said that shouldn’t be ignored. It says something about our times, however, that the author, “Gideon Scopes,” has used this as a pseudonym, because “given the current climate surrounding political expression in the technology industry, his real name is withheld.” All this to lead into a recommended book by my friend Ed Stetzer, [Christians in the Age of Outrage: How to Bring Our Best When the World Is at Its Worst](sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1539100059&sr=1-3&keywords=ed+stetzer). It’s not just the radical right and radical left that act badly, unfortunately. As the book’s blurb puts it: Today there are too many examples of those claiming to follow Christ being caustic, divisive, and irrational, contributing to dismissals of the Christian faith as hypocritical, self-interested, and politically co-opted. … [The book offers] new survey research of evangelicals and their relationship to the age of outrage [and offers] a constructive way forward. Timely, no? A Noble/Nobel Doctor Those in the know have long recognized the great work of Congolese gynecologist Denis Mukwege. The devout Lutheran has already won a number of humanitarian awards, and now he’s the recipient of the most prestigious: the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with rape victims. CT’s Kate Shellnutt worked up [a fine introduction to the man, his work, and his faith](. A Liberal Case for ‘Blue Laws’ Just when you think laws preventing certain activities on Sundays is a thing of the past, held on to mostly by conservatives in small towns, along comes this piece by a liberal saying [we need them today](. … in an era with increasingly fewer protections for workers, progressives and religious conservatives alike should unite to push for more blue laws that protect the sanctity of life outside of work. ‘Jesus Has This Effect on Dead People’ [A short piece]( on a keen insight from a prison Bible study. P.S. We had our first real chill yesterday so it’s quickly creeping towards the time where we start to think about Christmas.
