But there’s another piece of this job too: running for reelection. And with that comes a significant pressure to raise money. So long as my colleagues refuse to ban super PACs or put an end to limitless self-funding from billionaires, that’s the reality. I have to raise significant resources to make sure I can compete with whatever challenge comes my way, and it’s hard. Most politicians spend hour after hour in “call time” — sitting in a windowless room asking people for money. It can make you feel more like a telemarketer than a Senator. Admittedly, I am among the lucky ones. I made a bet a long time ago that by focusing more on the work of being a legislator and limiting the amount of time I spend fundraising, people would have my back when I needed it. And with Republicans threatening to shut down the government, focusing on my work in Washington couldn’t be more important. So I need to lean on you for support today.
