It’s an outrageous scam. Fortunately, the Senate Judiciary Committee just announced that they will move forward with a vote on ethics legislation later this month. I was the first in Congress to introduce a Supreme Court ethics bill over a decade ago, and I’m glad that my proposal is finally being considered. This bill would create a binding code of conduct that applies to all federal judges and justices — including the Supreme Court, which is currently excluded.]( I’ve introduced this bill in every Congress since 2011, and the crisis of confidence and trust in the Supreme Court is only getting worse. Earlier this year, we got multiple reports of Clarence Thomas’ entanglements and gifts from Harlan Crow, a billionaire with interests frequently before the Court. Other justices on the right have had similar questionable interactions with wealthy Republican interests. It is outrageous that every federal judge is bound by a code of ethics except for the nine who sit on the highest court in the country. Congress cannot allow for Supreme Court justices to so brazenly flout the conflict of interest rules that apply to every other federal judge. Just look at the Supreme Court’s latest decisions, and you can see how radical they have become. This is the most ethically compromised Supreme Court ever.
