As news broke in Georgia, my high school son called me because his school was also in lockdown. I called him when school got out and I asked him how it made him feel. He just shrugged it off and said he was used to it. That is chilling. We have failed our kids so badly that they just expect to live in a state of constant risk. Many have simply internalized the constant threat of violence and can’t imagine a different world. It’s hard to calculate the damage that this baked-in trauma causes in our kids. Before I’m a senator, I’m a parent, and this reality breaks my heart. I know we don't have to choose this reality for our children. They do not have to live in a world where they run for their lives as assassins hunt them in school hallways. We — as parents, friends, neighbors — can choose a different reality this November. We can elect candidates who take our kids’ safety seriously. But I need your help to do it.
