[James Altucher]I donât know how many times she punched me before I woke up.
âShould I break up with her?â
I asked my therapist. âWhat do you think I should do?â
âWell....â
Therapists never tell you what to do.
âPeople donât want to be told what to do,â Lori Gottlieb said. âThey think they do. Theyâll beg you to tell them what to do. But, really, people want to have agency over their own lives.â

âA lot of people are shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly,â she said on my podcast. âI want to hold up a mirror and help them see their reflection more clearly.â
She told me some of the reasons why we canât see ourselves clearly. And how this affects the decisions we make every day.
Here are 3 reasons we get stuck in the same bad decisions:
1. WEâRE NOT SELF-CURIOUS
I was the one with the gun. I thought the therapist was torturing me. âGive me the answer! Set me free! I want to go home!â
I broke up with this girlfriend. I put the gun down.
And therapy got better.
Because I stopped wondering what was wrong with her. And started wondering what was wrong with me.
âA lot of people come to therapy to change someone else,â Lori said. âAnd quickly, they realize the only person they can change is themselves. They need to get curious about what their role is.â
Thatâs Loriâs No. 1 goal as a therapist.
Self-curiosity.

2. WE KEEP SECRETS
Lori dated a guy for two years. Then he broke up with her.
âI thought we were going to get married,â she said.
So she found a therapist. And made the same mistakes her clients make.
She said, âI wanted what a lot of people want. I wanted him to back me up. I wanted him to say, âNo youâre not crazy! You dodged a bullet there.â But thatâs not what he did.â
âWhy did you think you were different? Why did you think you were going to get validation when you already know you donât do that for your patients?â
âYeah, itâs hard to see ourselves clearly,â she said. âWe keep lots of secrets. We keep secrets from the world. We keep secrets from people close to us. We keep secrets from our therapist, but we also keep secrets from ourselves. And those are the ones the therapist works really hard to uncover.â

Lori said there are always two problems to every problem:
PROBLEM A is the âpresenting problem.â
This is what you think is wrong with your life. âMy boyfriend broke up with me.â
âMy boss sucks.â
Whatever.
Lori calls this âthe red herring.â She says, âBut itâs often a symptom of something bigger thatâs going on underneath.â
PROBLEM B is the âunderlying problem.â
Lori wants to find the underlying problem â...so they can change the things that arenât working out so well for them.â
3. WEâRE SCARED
Iâve asked 500 peak performers how they got over their fear.
Sara Blakely, billionaire founder of SPANX challenged herself to NEVER get too comfortable.
She said, âWhenever I started to get scared, Iâd find a way to embarrass myself on purpose.â
I do this, too. (When I remember.)
One time, I dared myself to go into a coffee shop and ask for 10% off. For no reason at all. The guy behind the counter looked confused.
He got the manager.
âYouâre asking for a discount? Is something wrong?â
âNo. Iâd just like a discount please.â
It was uncomfortable for everybody.
Success.
Another example: Tony Robbins.
Every day, he throws himself into a freezing tank of water. He has a rule: âI will not negotiate with myself.â
Justice Sonia Sotomayor told me she hated her first job as a lawyer.
So she left. Thatâs scary.
But instead of being scared, she searched for an alternative future. And found Bob Morgenthau. He gave her a job. And it changed her life. Now sheâs on the Supreme Court.
âMost people know what they should do,â Lori said. âThe question is why donât they do it?â
âRight. So why donât they do it?â
âBecause whatever theyâre doing protects them. Their way of coping feels safe to them. Even if theyâre miserable in the safety.â
Everyone I interview chooses potential misery over certain misery. They choose to be scared. They choose to get rid of the things that arenât working for them.
Itâs a muscle. Over time, they begin to trust themselves more and more.
Thatâs key.
Trust and self-curiosity.
So next time I go to therapy, I wonât ask for answers.
Iâll ask for the mirror.
