The feel-good pop-up Soup & Bread is back! [READER]( [Food & Drink]( December 1, 2023 Usually on Fridays I like to use this space to hype [Monday Night Foodball]( the Reader’s weekly chef pop-up at Ludlow Liquors. But this week, I already wrote about Alejandra Rivera’s [Cadinho Bakery]( in the print issue and online. I can’t really devote enough excitement to this Monday’s preview of her McKinley Park brick-and-mortar and the door she’s opened to the wonderful world of Portuguese pastries. Be there! But I’m also extremely juiced by yesterday’s announcement that the community Crock-pot party Soup & Bread is returning to the Hideout on [January 3]( and every other first Wednesday through April. I’ve made soup on a [handful]( of [occasions]( over the [event’s]( 14-year history, and I can confirm that it’s the feel-good pop-up of soup season. Pop-up? I don’t recall anybody using that term back in 2009, when it was all about [underground restaurants]( and secret supper clubs. But S&B, which has raised more than 100 large for local food pantries, was kind of the precursor for the open, freewheeling, alt-economy pop-up scene that blossomed during the pandemic, and which we all enjoy today. If you want to volunteer to make soup, hit up former Reader-ites Martha Bayne and Sheila Sachs at [soupnbread10@gmail.com](. Excepting Mondays, it’s the most feel-good and filling hang of the week.
