Finding peace away from a busy calendar. [READER]( The Daily Reader November 22, 2023 I spent this past weekend up north in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I’m not always eager to leave Chicago, since I’m never short on things I want to participate in, regardless of the day of the week. Just before I went north, I took in a Chicago Film Society screening of Michael Roemer’s The Plot Against Harry, which esteemed Reader film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum introduced. (You can read his 1985 capsule review of The Plot Against Harry [right here]( All of which is to say that even as fall drifts into winter my calendar has no relief from events I want to see. But getting away from town for a couple days did me some good; wandering through state parks and art museums I’d never been to rejuvenated me. (I highly recommend taking the trip north just to see the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, a museum with [bathrooms that are also works of art]( Also, yes, I partook in a tiny bit of research related to a long-form story I’m dreaming of writing, but I’ll hold off on saying more about that for the moment. I write this while scrambling to wrap up some deadlines before a long weekend. I’m sticking around town. I enjoy the city when it quiets down for a national holiday—this, too, is rejuvenating. And however you spend the next week, I hope you find whatever peace you need to carry on through the rest of the year.
