I do enjoy revisiting music from the past, too. [READER]( The Daily Reader November 15, 2023 I’m not a terribly nostalgic person, especially when it comes to art. Sure, I like music, film, art, and literature from the past, but not because I became emotionally attached to it at some earlier part of my life. I do enjoy revisiting music and movies I loved at an earlier age, because I like to see how my changing tastes and perspectives have enriched those pieces of art. But I don’t desire to experience a song the way I did when I was, say, 9. A few days ago I started listening to Stepdream, the new album from a Florida rock musician who records under the name Quannnic. The second song, “South,” transported me back in time in the way only music can; the thick guitar tones that form a huge rush of sound at the song’s start felt as powerful and overwhelming to me as when I first heard grunge at the age of 8. I remember wanting to immerse myself in the sound of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” to let the song’s momentum take me wherever it ended up. “South”' gave me a similar sensation. I’ve listened to the song, I suspect, dozens of times since music critic [Eli Enis]( tweeted about them on Friday, and I still am taken by “South.” I suspect I’ll ride this obsession out for at least a few more weeks, and not because it reminds me of music that came before, but because it's still perplexing and exciting to me now. I’ve included the song on [this week’s Reader playlist]( which I’ve also linked (as always) further in this email.
