Donate to the Chicago Reader today! 🏳️‍🌈 Happy Pride, Chicago! 🏳️‍🌈 Our city’s LGBTQ+ history comes from the Warehouse, South Side Ballroom, and the Gay Liberation marches. We’ve come a long way, but what does pride mean for people in Chicago in 2023? We talked to three readers about Pride: Sayeed, a community activist based in Pilsen, is committed to education as a means of empowerment. To them, sharing books that explore queer identities is pride. Amari, a journalist, is the founder of an intersectional feminist zine. For her, pride embodies the concepts of liberation and love. Yaw, originally from Ghana, says pride to him is building his chosen family and advocating for queer liberation globally. Learn more from these folks in the short video below! We have a goal of increasing our coverage of LGBTQ+ culture, [but how much does it cost?]( Let’s give you an idea: $150 to hire a freelancer to cover a local indie queer film $600 to send a photographer and writer to cover an LGBTQ+ culture event $1,000 to pay for reporting and editing a queer-themed investigative piece [Your donation]( no matter how big or small, will go toward building a community of artists, journalists, activists and everyday folks who are creating the city we call home.
