[READER]( On Sunday, my old high-school friend, Josh, stopped by my house along with his son, Ethan, and his 20-something-year-old nephew, Will. As we sat in the backyard—socially distancing, of course—Josh was brilliantly orating about the current controversy over Confederate monuments, when it occurred to me: I knew Josh when he was a member of the White Sox Fan Club, Evanston High School chapter. Folks, let me tell you—it’s hard to seriously take something someone is saying—no matter how brilliantly he’s saying it—when you know he did something so lame as join the White Sox Fan Club back in high school. Of course, for all I know, Josh was thinking the same thing about me, when I was delivering my own brilliant oration on Confederate monuments. Not only was I a member of the White Sox Fan Club—I was a charter member. You might say that being in the White Sox Fan Club was my greatest high-school achievement. That and passing chemistry—a true miracle. Being on the White Sox Fan Club didn’t require too much. All you had to do was show up for the meetings. In fact, you probably didn’t even have to do that. Still, as I recall, I attended each and every meeting, where I and other members spent our time happily talking about (what else?) the White Sox. Which is probably what we would have been doing even if we weren’t in the White Sox Fan Club. As you might imagine, it’s tough to pretend you were a super-cool, high school kid, when you know that somewhere in the world there exists a yearbook with a picture of you in the White Sox Fan Club. Thing is—I still love the White Sox. In fact, if there was a White Sox Fan Club at the Reader, I’d be a member. Some things never change. Love you, Josh! Sincerely, [Irene Hsiao]( on Manual Cinema.
