This is 2020 and I’m proud to report that I haven’t had any issue writing down the year on

[READER]( This is 2020 (as Barbara Walters might say) and I’m proud to report that I haven’t had any issue writing down the year on checks thus far (only wrote the one, for rent, but still . . .). I’ve also been looking forward to seeing this new decade of ours start. We’ve got a lot of positive and exciting things happening at the Reader, and in Chicago at large. The Blackhawks have been winning (sort of), there’s no “Tenth Avenue Freeze Out” style polar vortex on the way (as far as I know), and my email inbox has been a bevy of marijuana-flavored puns as all sorts of venues, institutions, and public-facing entities seem to be dedicated to hosting upcoming events featuring cannabis (or at least adjacent) vendors and subject matter. We’ll see how all of that goes. I’ll quote my own Twitter here: My unsolicited advice doesn’t stop at business names. Here are some events that you might want to consider starting the year with. Let us know how it goes! Thanks for reading, [Salem Collo-Julin]( Sat 1/4 [Buddy Guy & Jimmy Johnson]( at Buddy Guy’s Legends: Sun 1/5 [Dance Nation]( at Steppenwolf Mon 1/6 [Hanami featuring Mai Sugimoto]( the Green Line Performing Arts Center Tue 1/7 [Manas, Rempis/Lopez Duo]( at Elastic Arts Wed 1/8 [Soup & Bread community meal]( with DJ Carrie Weston at the Hideout Thu 1/9 [Gone West & Colbie Caillat]( at Joe’s The audio from [Dateline broadcasts]( on Spotify [Oh No, It’s Dwayne Kennedy!]( (Dwayne Kennedy’s comedy album) This [Maria Chavez 1998 mix]( [Rest in peace to Chloe the punk-scene pug]( Plus: Online ecology publication Mid Magazine launches with an Ariel Zetina mix, and Thalia Hall hosts a benefit for pediatric brain tumor research.
