[View this e-mail as a web page]( October 8, 2019 Big news in my life! Mick Dumke, my co-host of [First Tuesdays]( the monthly political talk show we’ve been doing at the Hideout since 2014, has decided to, gulp, step down. No, no, say it ain’t so, Mick! Alas, it’s true. After five years, Mick decided he could use a break. He plans to spend more time with his family. Just kidding, but isn’t that what they always say about these things? Mick is a great journalist and a dear friend. I will miss fretting with him over what we should talk about and who we should invite to do the talking. Well, maybe I won’t miss the fretting. Anyway, the show must go on. As such, Reader writer, [Maya Dukmasova]( speaking of great journalists, has agreed to be my co-host. Our next show is Tuesday November 5. Maya and I will be talking about the teachers strike—which by then will be averted, settled, or raging on. As always, show time is 6:30 PM at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia. Sincerely, Ben Joravsky “[The Hustlers at Score]( Robin Pressler’s 2015 article from New York Magazine about a crew of strippers who rip off a bunch of Wall Street types. I finally got around to seeing the movie on which the article is based starring Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu. Can’t say I even remotely feel sorry for the guys who got ripped off. See the movie and then read the story. “[We Were Wiped Out]( Brian Rosenthal’s New York Times story about how a bunch of hustlers from New York cornered the taxi medallion market here in Chicago. Here’s a hint: they had contacts in Mayor Richard M. Daley’s City Hall. Vibe’s [tribute]( to the great Diahann Carroll, who died on October 4 at the age of 84. Back in the late 1960s, she was the star of Julia, a sitcom about a single mom who was a nurse. Ms. Carroll was the first Black woman to have her own show. It was a big deal back in the day. CPS teacher [Andrea Parker]( talks about why teachers are threatening to go on strike. [Show Schedule]( [‘Enough is enough’]( Many in Chicago's Hong Kong community share common concerns for the safety of loved ones back home. By [Hillary Johnson]( [High-rise, high anxiety]( Lakeview residents fear the transit-oriented development replacing the shuttered Treasure Island supermarket will create a parking crunch. Here’s why they’re wrong.
