Masala cheesesteak + Indian-style barbecue return. [View this email in your browser]( [READER Logo]( [Food & Drink]( | August 16, 2024 There’s something in the smoke that clouds the ability to see straight and think clearly. It starts stampedes. It flips vegetarians. I’ve seen these wonders with my own eyes each time [Sheal Patel]( comes around, beckoning with come-hither eyes and masala-scented barbecue. It’s happening again this August 19 when Patel’s Dhuaan BBQ returns—for the fifth time—to [Monday Night Foodball]( the Reader’s weekly chef pop-up at Frank and Mary’s Tavern. Patel has been a Foodball favorite from [nearly]( the [beginning]( consistently and [quickly]( selling out of whatever Indian-style barbecue he chooses to seduce his marks. That’s why it’s fitting he’s kicking off Foodball’s third anniversary week with his Nashville hot-style smoked chicken wings, extinguishable only with his Kashmiri chili-fueled tandoori ranch. He’s also setting up an Indo-Chinese-style fried rice bar, with Sichuan-seasoned rice with your choice of smoked chicken, beef, or Impossible protein. You might recall that [last March]( when Patel brought these items to his last Foodball, they sold out before the sun went down. He even cleared out of a secret menu item—his signature masala cheesesteak, which he’s bringing again. That’s why I urge you, friends, to queue up promptly starting at 5 PM, because when the smoke clears, the fire is out. That’s this Monday, August 19, at 2905 N. Elston in ardent Avondale. Meanwhile, please consider the full Foodball schedule: [Have you eaten?]( The quiet power of feeding each other. by [Yasmin Zacaria Mikhaiel]( | [Read more]( → [Smoke gets in your eyes when Dhuaan BBQ returns for the third anniversary of Monday Night Foodball]( Check out Sheal Patel’s slow-smoked Indo-Chinese menu for the Reader’s weekly chef pop-up at Frank and Mary’s Tavern. by [Mike Sula]( | [Read more]( → [Reader Bites]( celebrates dishes, drinks, and atmospheres from the Chicagoland food scene. [Chicken tikka toastie at Swadesi Cafe]( The chicken tikka toastie looks like a straightforward panini-style sandwich, but the humble white bread exterior belies a sophisticated medley of flavors within. There’s neatly diced tandoori chicken with its marinade and char, rich and creamy makhani sauce, a hint of peppery arugula, mint chutney, and both Amul and cheddar cheeses. It’s perfect for eating at your desk without making a mess. —Amber Gibson You may have noticed the Food & Drink section on our website looks a little different!
