She is the kind of leader that we tried to portray in The West Wing’s best moments. Hers is a story that took her from public defender to the first African American woman to serve as Chief Justice of North Carolina. Just like the characters we portrayed on television, she is inspiring, hardworking, and dedicated to serving people and getting results and justice for all. But unlike The West Wing, there is no writers’ room that can control the outcome of an election. That’s up to each and every one of us. A country where rising health care and prescription drug costs mean larger profits for Big Pharma while our loved ones put off lifesaving treatments or ration medications? Will we be a country where truth is thwarted by lies and conspiracies that put the interests of extreme politicians above all else? Absolutely not, and I refuse to sit on the sidelines. This is a country where we can elect North Carolina’s first Black Senator and where she can cast the decisive 51st vote to protect our democracy, our rights and our freedoms. We must do everything we can to fight for the vision of a more equal America that we all aspire for.
