As I was thinking about how much grassroots supporters like you have done for our campaign, I thought I should reach out to you directly to tell you why I decided to run for Senate and why your support is so important to our success. As Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, I saw up close how justice was too often out of reach for people. I saw the ways laws handed down by Washington leave our families behind and how the wealthy and well-connected use our broken status quo to get ahead. The truth is Washington has failed to deliver for our families, and I knew this race was a real opportunity for North Carolinians to have a change. We need a leader in the Senate who will break through the division and gridlock to stand up for the people. Despite winning statewide twice, I knew this race would be unlike any challenge I’d taken on before. These Senate races are just so big and expensive — and honestly, they can get nasty. I knew I’d have to lean on more folks than I ever have before for support to pull this off — especially when we’re trying to do it the right way by rejecting corporate PAC money. Honestly, I wish what we’d already raised would be enough because I hate to ask for money. But outside groups have already spent $8 million on behalf of my opponent before a single vote has been cast, and we know there are tens of millions of dollars more headed our way. It takes an enormous amount of resources to run a campaign that can organize and speak to the hopes and needs of voters from the mountains to the coast, rural and urban alike.
