Modern astrologers have assigned Chiron the epithet “the wounded healer,” partly due to the plot twist where this “wisest and justest of centaurs” is pierced by a poisoned arrow. Though Chiron was renowned as a healer (he literally taught Asclepius, the god of medicine, how to heal), this was one wound he couldn’t mend. What we lose in the epithet “wounded healer” is that Chiron was first and foremost a mentor. In addition to Asclepius, the heroes Achilles, Ajax, Heracles, Perseus and Jason numbered among his students, as well as the famous twins Castor and Pollux, and the god, Dionysus. Chiron’s name roots from “kheir,” the Greek word for hand, and Chiron was an expert in all manner of handcrafts, including archery, music, the lyre, medicine-making, and divination. Astronomically speaking, Chiron has been classified as a minor planet, located between Saturn and Uranus in our solar system.
