Sitting too much? Chances are you’ve heard that “sitting is the new smoking.” (Chances are you’re actually sitting down while you’re reading this…hopefully not while smoking.) While that may be a bit of a stretch, that colloquialism sheds light on the potential perils of a sedentary lifestyle. The dangers of sitting too much are so concerning, in fact, that the scientific community has coined the term “sitting disease.” And the unfortunate reality is that the overwhelming majority of folks sit too much, and quite frankly, it’s killing us. There’s no sugar-coating it. So, how do you know if you’re sitting too much and suffocating your health through a sedentary lifestyle? Take a long, hard look at your average day and think about how much time you’re sitting… - How much time are you spending sitting in the car, on your commute, for example? - How many hours are you sitting at work? - How much time are you sitting down at how, relaxing on the couch, for example? If your answers add up to 10 - 13 hours or more, you’re pretty much normal. But this is a case where being “normal” is not good news because it also means you are very much living a sedentary lifestyle. And, no joke, it’s literally killing you. Don’t believe us? Physical inactivity is the 4th leading factor for global mortality, and it’s estimated that 3.2 million deaths a year are related to physical inactivity. Need more evidence Take a look at the alarming results from a 2010 American Cancer Society study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, which followed 123,216 folks (69,776 women and 53,440 men) from 1993 - 2006: - Women who were inactive and sat over 6 hours a day were 94% more likely to die compared to those who were physically active and sat less than 3 hours a day. - Men who were inactive and sat over 6 hours a day were 48% more likely to die than their more active counterparts. Additionally, a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine also found that people who sit for long, uninterrupted periods of time have an increased risk of disease. And along those lines, multiple studies have corroborated to find that a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of: - Weight gain and obesity - Metabolic syndrome - Type 2 diabetes - Cardiovascular disease - Certain types of cancer - Varicose veins - Depression - Anxiety - Cognitive decline - Muscle and joint pain - Losing muscle mass and strength Wow, that’s awesome. Not! Especially since the environment of our modern world is specifically designed to sit…and sit…and sit. It seems almost crazy to think that something that’s so natural could be so harmful. We sit to eat, work, socialize, and travel, and we sit again for entertainment. And we’re sitting more now than ever before. Believe it or not, the average office worker spends up to an alarming 15 hours a day on their butts (including office time and home). But it’s not all bad news, and in an upcoming newsletter, we’ll crack the code on sitting disease, giving you actionable steps you can take to combat a sedentary lifestyle. (As an appetizer, let’s just say that regular exercise, while very important, won’t cut it by itself.) In the meantime, please, please share this with a friend, family member, or anyone you care about.  1-Min Butt Toning Workout...
