Hey Boo! This is a must read if someone you know is always running late and it drives you crazy (even if that someone is you!) But first, Happy 4th of July weekend! I hope wherever you are, you experience joy! No sparklers or fireworks for us this year, but I promise we are truly celebrating freedom! In fact, Iâm writing this from the airport in Madrid, Spain (our fourth country in a little over a week). Bret and I have structured our lives to have as much freedom as we want. I donât work because I have to, I do what I do because I love it, and Iâve designed it in such a way that we can travel the world together, freely. [image]( If you follow me on the socials, you might assume all this travel is just pure bliss. It is awesome! But nothing is ever as blissful as it seems. One of the biggest challenges we experience as a couple is around time. When it comes to time - we are completely incompatible, and it really shows up when weâre away from home. For many of us with ADHD, the area of the brain that estimates the passage of time just doesnât work the way it does for others. Some people struggle with depth perception or processing written language. Some people are color blind to varying degrees. And some of us are blind to time. (Insert eye roll of the âif youâre not 15 minutes early, youâre lateâ person). But, it is a real thing. Itâs called time blindness, a light-hearted term used to describe a condition that can cause a lot of stress and heartache. For those of us with this processing deficiency, it is very difficult to estimate the passage of time: the timeframe of past events, as well as the length of time certain tasks require. People who show up late, miss the meeting, or canât recall specific timeframes are often considered, and even labeled as: unorganized, selfish, careless, unreliable, forgetful, clueless, unprofessional, disrespectful, and even rude. I know this is almost impossible to imagine if youâre the always on-time type. I get it. Iâm married to him. When we first got married it was a true source of resentment between the two of us. I knew it was up to me to create systems to combat it. It took several years and a lot of trial and error, but eventually I figured out ways to cope and show up on time! (Let me tell ya, it does a number on your self-esteem to know people think of you in these terms.) Spoiler alert: itâs not that I got better at estimating the passage of time. Rather, I found ways to cope: systems, triggers, alarms, reminders, and even a personal assistant. But 80% of those things are back in California, including my assistant. So yup, you guessed it-Iâm struggling-and this is one part of me that Bret does not find even a little bit cute. BTW - suggesting someone just âget better at time managementâ is like asking someone who canât reach the top shelf, to just âget taller.â Much of how we process information is controlled by our brains. Itâs not as easy as it sounds to âjust leave earlier,â or âset an alarm.â The science behind it is not only fascinating, it will likely help you to understand your often late loved one. Writing that piece and discussing the research with Bret has helped us both to establish some travel-based coping mechanisms. Guess what???? Itâs what Iâm doing now to ensure the second half of this vacation goes more smoothly. One thing Iâm not missing while traveling are my workouts. I might run a bit later than normal, or even get lost while on long walks, but my consistency is on-point no matter where I am in the world. I donât let subpar hotel gym equipment or jet-lag interfere with the one thing that always gets my brain primed and ready for the day (not to mention my body feeling strong and ready to stay up way later than I do when weâre at home).
