To me, this is personal. I watched in horror as our mayor was not able to deploy the D.C. National Guard to the Capitol on January 6, 2021 during the insurrection, because the President controls the D.C. National Guard. I watched in horror as President Trump deployed thousands of federal law enforcement officers and National Guard troops in downtown D.C. against residents engaging in constitutionally protected protests. And I refuse to let this cycle continue. There are more than 700,000 Americans in our nation’s capital. 63% of whom are people of color. And 45% of that population are Black. Denying D.C.’s residents equal participation and representation in Congress is a mass disenfranchisement of Americans disproportionately targeting Black and brown citizens. But if D.C. Statehood passed, Democrats would not only gain two seats – but they could gain two Black Senators. [If you want two more Democratic Senators in the U.S. Senate, I need your help. Can you rush $5 to pressure the Senate to pass D.C. Statehood? If H.R.51 passed, Democrats would not only gain two seats – but they could gain two Black Senators. If H.R.51 passed, Democrats would not only gain one more Representative – but they could gain a Black representative. D.C. Statehood could give Democrats two Black Representatives. It would allow those Black Senators and the state’s representatives to allocate funding appropriately in the city. Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema stabbed Democrats in the back and sided with Mitch McConnell multiple times. But if Washington D.C. became a state, Democrats wouldn’t have to depend on traitors like Manchin and Sinema. They defended our democracy through military service. They have fought and died in every American war since the Revolutionary War. They have spilled blood time and time again, all while being denied voting representation in Congress and remaining disenfranchised in our nation’s capital. This is simply unjust. D.C.’s veterans should have the same rights as everyone who serves. [If you care about veterans, I need you to rush $5 to pressure the Senate to pass D.C. Statehood.
