Remembering Congressman Alcee Hastings

Our country has lost a racial justice champion, Florida has lost an unapologetic leader, and the Congressional Black Caucus has lost one of our most powerful members. We -- the nation, the state of Florida, and the United States Congress -- are grieving the loss of a trailblazer in civil rights. As a law student, Mr. Hastings was arrested six times for protesting racial inequality and injustice. And as a civil rights attorney, he was known as a crusader against racial injustice. Years later, he served as Florida's first Black federal judge for over 10 years. Congressman Hastings was elected to the House of Representatives in 1993 and served as the Representative of Florida for over 15 years. In his 15 terms, he championed gun safety legislation and became one of the most respected voices in international affairs. He continued his fight for civil rights as the Senior Democratic Whip, leading the fight for affordable healthcare, election reform, affordable childcare, family and medical leave, and education policy. Congressman Hastings inspired us all to never give up on the fight for a more representative democracy. His spirit will never be forgotten, and we're committed to carrying forward his incredible legacy.
