Black Friday and Singles' Day have passed, as has= Thanksgiving, and Christmas is on the way. These are some of the most sign= ificant events in the e-commerce calendar for air cargo and an established = part of the peak, and no doubt these e-commerce events have contributed to = our year-on-year increase in volumes for October. =09=09=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09=09=09 For Cathay Cargo, this peak has been the= continuation of a trend we have seen all year. The flow of e-commerce from= the southern part of the Chinese Mainland to the Americas has to some exte= nt been our life blood this year, and our 39 freighter services a week to t= he Americas are demonstrating the strength of the transpacific route in ter= ms of volumes and yields. While yields are not as high as they were during = the pandemic because of the growing belly-hold capacity, we are outperformi= ng pre-pandemic 2019 in terms of revenue thanks to e-commerce and some long= -term export business. =09=09=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09=09=09 This points to some recovery in the US e= conomy, and some uplift in consumer confidence. But while there has also be= en some headway in clearing some of the inventory backlog, consumer behavio= ur has changed. Online shopping is very much to the fore, to the extent tha= t we have been running two charters a week to Mexico carrying consumer e-co= mmerce, showing it’s a regional trend. =09=09=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09=09=09 We have been celebrating [10 years of operat= ions to Mexico](3D"http=) this past month, and I have just returned from celebrati= on events to thank the customers and suppliers who have helped make a treme= ndous success of our flights to Guadalajara and Mexico City. We started out= with two freighter flights per week. This December we are running eight, w= hich speaks for itself. There have been dramas along the way, and the types= of cargo exported has changed, but we are very proud to be a primary air-c= argo connector between South and Latin America and Asia through our Mexican= ports and Miami. =09=09=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09=09=09 The Southern Hemisphere summer is in ful= l swing now, and that means we are flying a lot of perishables, especially = berries, from South America via our ports in Mexico, Miami and beyond, and = that is progressing well. =09=09=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09=09=09 [Our Americas gateway, Anchorage](3D"=), where = almost all of our freighters stop before and after the transpacific leg of = their journeys, was affected by very heavy snow in early November causing f= light cancellations, diversions and a big backlog of cargo to clear. Huge k= udos to our Cathay Cargo team who helped get everything back to normal. =09=09=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09=09=09 Nonetheless, the overall operation now f= aces more disruption, with the Federal Aviation Authority in the United Sta= tes requiring all Boeing 747 operators to carry out urgent mandatory checks= on the lightning protection systems on wing fuel tanks. To be compliant wi= th these checks, we will need to adjust the freighter schedule from mid-Dec= ember onwards. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause and appre= ciate your understanding. Our sales teams will be available to talk through= any concerns you may have once the schedule has been revised. =09=09=09=09=09=09 =09=09=09=09=09=09 Elsewhere, in better news, we have annou= nced our plans for long-term growth with the [next-generation Airbus A350F frei= ghter](3D"=) to meet our future fleet requirements. We have placed an initial = order for six aircraft and the right to acquire 20 more. Our digitalisation= journey is continuing with a new app for our operational teams in Hong Kon= g ahead of a global roll-out. [Cargo Connect](3D"=) will put everything related to= the Cargo operation in the palm of our peoples’ hands, enabling them= to focus on delivering an even better level of service, and taking out mor= e paper from the business.
