Friends & Neighbors,
Every 10 years, our country conducts a census to make sure that every American has equal representation in Congress and equitable distribution of important community funding for things like infrastructure, housing, education, and more.
As many of you know, I've been fighting hard to protect the integrity of the census by ensuring a fair and accurate count. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has been making brazen assaults on our census by trying to add a citizenship question and discounting undocumented immigrants â which is directly opposed to the Constitution, where it clearly states that the census should include anyone living in the United States. Not just those who are likely to vote for Trump.
And Donald Trump just succeeded in one of his plots to sabotage the census.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it's more critical than ever that a fair and accurate census count is taken. Everyone from fellow advocates to census officials agreed that the deadline for counting should be extended due to the disruptions from COVID-19, and for a while, that was the case.
The deadline for the census has been moved several times as we've battled back and forth with Trump and the GOP Administration. But in August, the Secretary of Commerce filed a motion to move the end date up from October 31 to September 30. And just last week, that decision was upheld and allowed to be implemented by the Supreme Court.
This harmful decision could result in an undercount that would disproportionately harm marginalized communities and damage our democracy for the next 10 years and beyond. I'm outraged. But rest assured, I'm not backing down.
If I'm re-elected, I promise to never give up championing the census and defending this important constitutional mandate. For now, we must march onward and continue combatting the endless attacks on our institutions from a corrupt administration. And in November, that will mean fighting back with our ballots.
