[Carolyn Maloney for Congress](
Welcome to A Maloney Minute: COVID-19 Edition (Vol. 5). During the COVID-19 crisis, Carolyn has been busy fighting to protect the health and wellbeing of the American people.
Hereâs what Carolyn's been working on:
Repaying Our Debt to Healthcare Workers:
[Maloney Introduces Student Loan Bill](
Medical professionals on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic have been saving lives and risking their own safety to protect and serve our community. We owe them an incredible debt for their services, and last week, Carolyn introduced a way that we can start to repay them. She introduced the Student Debt Forgiveness for Frontline Health Care Workers Act, which would relieve doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals of graduate student loan debt for those providing care for COVID-19 patients. [The bill would apply forgiveness of debt for recent graduates, as well as medical professionals who are still paying off loans.](
Raising Concerns Over Medical Supplies:
[Salon Jared Kushner Article Headline](
Last week, the national stockpile of critical medical supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE) was officially depleted. This has left the states to fend for themselves, causing major competition and a free-for-all bidding war. Carolyn has been working hard to provide transparency on these issues and hold the administration accountable for their failure to utilize the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Defense Production Act early on in order to manage the procurement and disruption of these supplies. Carolyn joined the Committee on Homeland Security Chairman in [sending a letter to FEMA investigating reports of redirected shipments of these supplies meant for states and hospitals against protocols.]( And in the Oversight Committee, Carolyn released a new document from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) detailing the administrationâs insufficient disruption of PPE and medical supplies from the Strategic National Stockpile.
Releasing Detainees at Our Borders:
[Releasing Detainees During COVID](
Recent reports have been surfacing about detainees and staff at multiple immigration detention centers who have tested positive for COVID-19. The overcrowding of these facilities poses a serious threat to detainees and employees at these sites, as well as communities where these centers are located. Carolyn and her colleague, Rep. Jamie Raskin, [wrote to DHS demanding that non-violent detainees, particularly those with underlying health conditions, be released,]( citing reports from the agencies that confirmed they had no real plans to mitigate the ill effects of COVID-19 on those in detention.
Fighting to Save USPS:
[Maloney Protecting USPS](
Without immediate aid, USPS could cease operations by the end of the year - and the provisions won by Democrats in the CARES Act are simply not enough. [Carolyn is continuing to fight for emergency funding for the post office,]( which offers a lifeline not just to rural Americans, but to all who depend on the mail for delivery of medication -- and absentee ballots. Following the Governorâs announcement that all New Yorkers will be allowed to vote in the primaries by absentee ballot, it is more important than ever that this vital public service stays afloat.
Everyday Heroes:
[North Brooklyn Angels Facebook](
While so many are sacrificing to put themselves on the front lines, itâs heartening to see how others are stepping up to offer mutual aid. Today, Carolyn would like to acknowledge the everyday heroes at North Brooklyn Angels and Jimmyâs Diner in Greenpoint, who are helping feed our healthcare workers seven days a week. For more information, you can check out the [North Brooklyn Angels Facebook page.](
