Social distancing is a new kind of challenge. Protecting our health during this pandemic goes beyond

Social distancing is a new kind of challenge. Protecting our health during this pandemic goes beyond just our physical health. It can take its toll on our mental health as well ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ [Carolyn Maloney for Congress]( Hello Friends and Neighbors, Protecting our health during this pandemic goes beyond just our physical health. We’re all adapting to new challenges and restrictions, and that can take its toll on our mental health as well. That’s why I wanted to take a moment away from the relentless onslaught of the news to make sure you and your family have the resources you need to stay healthy — physically AND mentally. Here are some things that may help: - Exercise. While it’s vital that we stay at home and indoors as much as possible, you can take walks outside as long as you are mindful of practicing safe social distancing (6 feet of distance between you and others) and staying away from crowded public areas. Here in New York City, we’re looking at options to open up pedestrian streets and relieve crowding in public parks. And between meetings, I try to do my favorite Jane Fonda workout -- [here's a link]( if you want to try it out! - Find ways to be together, apart. Companies like Zoom, Skype, and even Google offer online group video chats that will let you connect with the people you love — and there’s always the option of using an old-fashioned text or phone call. As our governor has said, there are three-word sentences that mean a lot right now: “I love you” and “I miss you” are powerful words that your friends and loved ones may need to hear. - If you see a mental health professional, check-in with them and see if you can book a remote session via telephone or video conferencing. Many have transitioned to remote sessions, which can be a lifeline in difficult times. - If you take medications, for mental health reasons or otherwise, do your best to obtain additional supplies now. I’m aware that some insurance companies are resisting overrides for extra medications, and am working to see what can be done about this. - While Team Maloney is NOT offering medical advice or mental health advice, we can offer human connection. If you’d like to have a friendly conversation with someone outside your home, [just let us know.](mailto:kendra@carolynmaloney.com) Our 100% remote voter contact program means we have interns and volunteers doing text-banking, phone-banking, and virtual events every day — and they would love to speak with you. - Finally, there are a number of resources available to those who are having difficulty coping with stress. [The National Alliance on Mental Illness]( (NAMI) is a great resource, and you can call them at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or text NAMI to 741741 for their 24/7 hotline. Through all of this, I am working day and night to fight COVID-19 and am confident that with enough hard work and solidarity, we will beat this virus together. Thank you to all of you who are working to be safe and responsible at this time, and thank you especially to those who have reached out and let me know what you’re experiencing and how my office can help. I hope you’ll continue to do so. We are all in this together. - Carolyn We need compassionate, hardworking leaders like Carolyn in Congress, especially during this time of crisis.
