We have a lot to be thankful for, even in the midst of challenges.
Here's what you made happen last month!
{NAME},
It's time we all celebrated a little. Let's admit it: we need it. It's been a tough few months for all of us in the Care2 community. We've struggled through painful events including the civil war in Syria, terrorist attacks, and the U.S. presidential election.
But we have also all done some really great work together. Last month, Care2 members saved a mountain lion from death and convinced the United Nations that a fictional cartoon character isn't an appropriate role model for women and girls worldwide. Find out more about these and other recently successful Care2 petitions below.
So remember that we do have a lot to be thankful for – even in the midst of challenging times. Don't lose hope. [You have power and you can use it by starting your very own Care2 petition.]
Los Angeles Mountain Lion Spared Death Sentence
Urban sprawl threatens mountain lions living in the Los Angeles, California area with extinction, and for the big cats that remain, survival depends on scavenging. After a neighborhood mountain lion wandered onto a ranch in the middle of the night and killed 10 alpacas left outside, the property owner obtained a permit to kill the big cat. But discouraging mountain lions from eating livestock is easy and solutions include keeping livestock inside at night. So Care2 member Anetta Bettis started a petition urging the landowner to spare the animal. After 23,273 people signed, the landlord agreed! [Read more about how Anetta helped save the big cat's life.]
Lewis & Clark College Becomes Sanctuary Campus
The election of Donald Trump as U.S. president has left many people worried, particularly because he has threatened to register Muslims in a database and deport undocumented immigrants. These fears inspired students, alumni, faculty and staff at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon to demand the school support and protect undocumented students. Their Care2 petition collected thousands of signatures and President Barry Glassner issued a statement promising to defend all students regardless of immigration status or religion. U.N. to Find New Honorary Ambassador
In October, the United Nations "hired" a new Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls. You might think she'd be a living, breathing woman and role model. Instead, the U.N. selected Wonder Woman, a fictional cartoon character who is owned by for-profit entertainment company DC Comics. In response, concerned staff members started a Care2 petition asking U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to reconsider this choice. After they collected 44,704 signatures in less than two months, they won! You can support women's rights too by [launching your own Care2 petition today.]
Corporate-Driven Trans-Pacific Partnership Deal is Dead
For six years, 12 Pacific Rim countries negotiated the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a controversial "free trade" agreement, behind closed doors. This deal was being pushed by big corporations and would have threatened fracking bans, GMO labels, democracy, and affordable medicines. As part of an international people-powered movement against the TPP, Care2's Lacey Kohlmoos started a petition urging the U.S. Congress to reject the deal. 165,000 signatures and lots of hard work later, we won! Now let's show big banks how strong people power is. [Tell them to stop funding dirty energy and the Dakota Access Pipeline!]
Justice the Dog Will Be Reunited With His Family
Justice is a 5-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier mix. After his owner Rose took him out for a walk in September, Justice was seized by local authorities and held in captivity for being a type of pit bull. But neighbors say the dog is so sweet-tempered, they would love to have him in their own family. So dog advocate Diane Coles started a Care2 petition asking authorities to release Justice. After thousands of local supporters signed, officials told Rose that as long as she neuters Justice and signs the proper exemption forms, he'll get to go home! Philando Castile's Murderer Charged
Philando Castile's mother says that he was "just black in the wrong place." Minnesota police stopped his car because of a broken rear light. But within minutes, they shot him four times in front of his girlfriend and young daughter. He died shortly afterwards. Care2 activist Kelsey Bourgeois started a Care2 petition demanding the Department of Justice charge the officer who shot Castile. More than 82,000 people signed her petition and thousands of activists spent months raising awareness about Castile's murder. In November, the officer was finally charged with manslaughter. You can hold local authorities accountable, too. [Start a Care2 petition.]
