[Give now.](     [CARE](   Days of war in Ukraine (since February 24, 2022): 734   Olga, age 60, lives in the Donetsk Region in Eastern Ukraine. In her town, 80% of buildings were damaged. CARE has supported the rehabilitation of 40 houses and another 300 are in process to be repaired. “A direct hit to our home was our greatest fear. Our neighbors’ homes were destroyed one by one. We knew it was only a matter of time before it was our turn.” Olga and her husband, with their dogs and cats, had to live in their basement for nearly 100 days when there was active fighting in their village. “That is where we survived.” On the basement door a word is written with white chalk. “We wrote ‘people’ on the door to increase our survival chances,” she shared.   [Olga, standing in front of red door](   [Finding food and drinking water is the biggest challenge for the villagers.]( was very dangerous and scary to move outside the basement. People were killed on the main street and their bodies had to be left there. So, we had to find other ways to move.” Together, Olga and her neighbors established a system to contact each other and communicate which paths were safe to take at the time. “We were sneaking from house to house and through backyards to look for food.” There is still no running water as the pipes were damaged. The whole area is full of mines. “We can only use the asphalt roads safely.” Before the escalation of the war two years ago, her village and the surrounding area was home to 12,000 people. Now just 2,700 remain – of which 1,200 are elderly such as Olga and her husband. [“We are very grateful for the support… we survived.”](   [//////////////////////////////////////////////](   Millions of brave families like Olga’s deserve safety, security, and the dignity of being able to provide for their future.   CARE has been and is still here working with partners in Ukraine and in neighboring countries to support a safe future for every family.
