I immediately realized it was an earthquake… Turkey is located in an earthquake zone. But this one was something completely different, extremely heavy. It felt like forever… like the ground collapsing. I couldn't move for a while because I was completely shocked. Then I heard screams in the building and on the street, and I realized that I had to run. We started to hold virtual meetings, and I was working in my car. Actually, we all were working in our cars, and we started to think about what the emergency response plan would be. As a lawyer, I manage the legal aid program in Turkey, helping people to access justice and exercise their legal rights. The legal support needed after the earthquakes is a very new situation for us, and it's so broad. We are dealing with inheritance law, housing, land, property rights, and legal proceedings for children whose families have passed away or disappeared. We also handle the legal procedures of refugees who lost their documents in the earthquake. This last week's one-year anniversary of the quakes marked a tragic event that, for us, resulted in the loss of over 60,000 lives, including two CARE staff. We commemorate the tragedy and trauma, and we are committed to providing support to all those affected by this tragedy.
