Q&A on Chad’s refugee and hunger crisis.   {NAME}, the bottom line is: “When people are scared, hungry, or thirsty … their only option is to move in search of safety, food, and water.” Mothers will do anything they can to protect and feed their children, even if it means fleeing their homes. Catch up on what’s happening in Africa’s Sahel with a CARE expert.   [START A RECURRING GIFT »](   [Hunger and refugee crisis in the heart of the Sahel](   [View online »](   [CARE Crisis Alert](   Q&A on Chad’s refugee and hunger crisis   with Deepmala Mahla, CARE Vice President of Humanitarian Affairs   What’s the situation in Chad?   Deepmala: The humanitarian situation in Chad is rapidly deteriorating. Millions of hardworking people have, for a long time, needed assistance just to survive. The most recent outbreak of conflict in Sudan has forced hundreds of thousands of people – mostly women and children – to flee for their lives. When people are scared, hungry, or thirsty … their only option is to move in search of safety, food, and water.   [Even before the recent conflict in Sudan, Chad hosted nearly 200,000 Sudanese refugees - most are women and children.](   What is the need right now?   Deepmala: Chad’s food crisis has created an urgent situation… without action, 1.8 million young children will be acutely malnourished before the end of the year.   [Chad: 1.8 million children under the age of 5 could be acutely manourished by the end of this year.](   What about the situation for women?   Deepmala: The situation for women is absolutely dire. Around 270,000 pregnant and lactating mothers will also face acute malnutrition this year. Women are skipping meals, there just isn’t enough to eat.   [Women are going whole days without eating to save the little food they have for their children. 'suffer when I think my children are hungry.' - Patrice, 37, refugee from Cameroon](   How is CARE responding?   Deepmala: We must fight hunger now with emergency food, but we are also building the resilience of women and their families to withstand the many challenges that keep them from returning home. Clean water and access to health clinics can save the lives of children under five and pregnant and lactating mothers.   “But saving lives requires acting fast. …In this day and age, it is inexcusable that millions of people are going hungry.”   The global hunger crisis is worse than ever before. Around 70% of the world’s hungry people live in regions affected by war, violence, and other conflict.
