What families like Yulia’s need most this winter.   [Ukraine](   Days of war (since February 24, 2022): 371 Temperature today in Lviv: 31℉ and freezing   [GIVE NOW](   [View online »](   [CARE](   {NAME}, last week marked one year since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Women and children have bravely endured an unimaginable year. But a brutal winter and unending attacks have left families without heat or electricity, enough food, or safe shelter. [$75 can provide fuel, cash, and quality shelter now »](   For millions of brave families like Yulia’s, they never imagined a year like this.   [A year of fear and a winter without electricity or heat](   In this photo: It wasn’t just dark, it was freezing as Yulia, age 32, did a puzzle by flashlight with her daughter and niece during a blackout this winter.   [GIVE NOW](   • Worry and fear. When Russia invaded Ukraine, Yulia worried about leaving her elderly parents behind or risking the future of her two young daughters. For five months, they stayed home – afraid the whole time – only eating food from their garden and hardly leaving the house.   • Determined to protect her children. Yulia made the decision millions of Ukrainian mothers had to… leave everything they have and know and get their children to safety.   • Far from home. There were more than 50 checkpoints from their home in the south to their destination in Lviv. At each one, they bravely carried on. Today, this family of five – Yulia, her two daughters, sister, and niece – share a small underground room (pictured above), unsure of what’s next.   • A brutal winter. Attacks have continued through the winter. Most days, the temperatures are below freezing. Their cellar room is especially cold and dark during the blackouts (caused by attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid and scheduled outages by the city so as not to overpower the system that remains).   [//////////////////////////////////////////////](   In the last year, nearly 6 million Ukrainians, like Yulia and her family, have bravely fled to another part of the country. Almost 17.5 million have fled to a neighboring country.   CARE and our partners are still here in Ukraine, Poland, Romania, and Slovenia, reaching families with food, water, hygiene kits, cash assistance, and psychosocial support. All over the world, we are helping refugee families in their most urgent moment of need – fleeing war, hunger, and drought – as they look to the future with hope.   This winter, needs have dramatically increased. Families need fuel, cash, and quality shelter. Your gift makes a difference.   [GIVE NOW](     A year of war, bravery, and your impact.
