{NAME}, news of this morningâs devastating back-to-back earthquakes came to us via our colleagues in Turkey: âAt 4:30 am this morning, the ground started shaking beneath our feet, one earthquake after another. Since then, we have felt multiple aftershocks. It is a difficult time for people in Northwest Syria who have, after years of displacement, found themselves in tents cuddled together this severe and cold winter trying to make ends meet. Women and children have not been spared. So to have an earthquake impact their tents, their lives, their nutritional status, and their mental health are devastating. We are waiting for the next aftershock, wondering when it will be.â – Sherine Ibrahim, CARE Turkey Country Director [Man carrying crying young girl]( What you need to know now: • This morning, February 6, a deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeast Turkey and northern Syria â the impact was felt in Lebanon, Jordan, and Cyprus.
• A second 7.5-magnitude quake then struck 100 km north of the first earthquake.
• Initial reports are that the combined death toll is at least 2,300, with thousands missing. Most of the damage is where millions of Syrian refugees are trying to take shelter for the winter.
CAREâs priorities are: • Emergency items for refugees: Tents, mattresses, blankets, food items, clean drinking water, baby food, baby items, and thermal clothing â as immediately as possible. More than 60% of the millions of people in northwest Syria are displaced women with their children, whoâve relentlessly protected their families from conflict, hunger, and now disaster.
• Emergency response as a snowstorm looms: Snow and rain are making initial needs assessments challenging, and an impending snowstorm over the region will further complicate humanitarian aid delivery.
• The safety of all our staff in Turkey and Syria and their families.
Tents, warm blankets, clothing, water, and essential
baby items are the most urgent needs. CARE is working with the local municipalities to deliver emergency aid to as many families as quickly as possible. CARE has been operating in Syria since 1953 and in Turkey since 1959 – and will be here long after the quake recovery to ensure the future of all families. Your emergency gift right now supports this
earthquake response and reaches families in need.
