2022 Hunger Report: 43 million people one step away from famine. ? Dear CARE staff, donors, and su

2022 Hunger Report: 43 million people one step away from famine.   Dear CARE staff, donors, and supporters: On this last day of 2022, many are glad to leave this year behind and start new tomorrow. Many others, such as the 323 million hardworking people facing hunger right now, are forced to bring the impact of this year forward with them into 2023. Their homes and livelihoods were destroyed this year by climate disasters – drought, hurricanes, and floods. The war in Ukraine has driven up global hunger by millions of people. Other conflicts around the world are causing families to go hungry, flee their homes, and fear for tomorrow. Even still, they have hopes and dreams for their future. Together, we can and must start 2023 with urgency, action, and hope alongside millions of people who dream of a better new year. Please share this report. [Saving lives and changing food systems to prevent hunger will take every one of us urgently acting now before it’s too late.]( – Camille Davis, CARE Director of Humanitarian Planning   [LAST DAY - 5X ENDS AT MIDNIGHT](   [View online »](   [CARE](   5X EMERGENCY MATCH ENDS AT MIDNIGHT   [5X MATCH – SAVE LIVES](     2022 Hunger Report Summary   The worst year for hunger yet [FAMINE WARNING 43 million people are just one step away from famine.](   Over 43 million people are just one step away from famine. They are hardworking and fully capable of producing or earning enough to feed their families – but they are being starved by conflict, inequality, the impacts of climate change, and the continued fight against COVID-19 that has left them further behind. One person is dying of hunger every four seconds. In the Horn of Africa, at least 36.1 million people are going hungry due to the worst drought in 40 years. Hunger isn’t equal. Last year, 150 million more women than men were hungry, and the gap is widening. The war in Ukraine has driven up hunger by millions of more people this year. The fact is that Russia and Ukraine produce 28% of the world’s fertilizer, which is enough to grow food for 1.2 billion people. That’s equal to the population of the US, Mexico, and Europe combined. We must act now. We know what happens when the world responds too late: Lives are lost, the hunger crisis grows exponentially, and an entire generation will be robbed of their potential and future.     Your final gift of the year is tax-deductible and matched 5X to save lives and change food systems.   [$100 is matched to become $500](   [5X MATCH – SAVE LIVES](   CARE’s Year-End Campaign has a special match fund, which will allow one-time gifts made by December 31, 2022, to be matched up to a total of $5,000,000. If your one-time gift is received after December 31, 2022, or after we’ve reached our total match fund, it will not be matched but will still support our lifesaving programs. New monthly gifts are not matched as part of this special fund.   [FOOD/EQUALS/FUTURE](   [Facebook]( [Instagram]( [Twitter](   Text CARE to 227387 to receive SMS updates about your impact around the world.
