Your impact: This Sudanese village's first doctor in 10 years.   {NAME}, thank you for staying engaged with us this year as we’ve been fighting famine, empowering women from pastoralists to doctors, and bringing healthcare to the most remote villages for the first time in a long time. May your holiday season begin with an important reminder that your support is a source of hope for so many. Thank you.   [View online »](   [CARE](     [IMPACT](     For the first time in 10 years, a village in the highest mountains of Sudan has a doctor.   Meet Doctor Gisma Awad Hassan Rwah.   [Doctor Gisma Awad Hassan Rwah]( [-----](   Doctor Gisma Awad Hassan Rwah, Gorlangbang Health Clinic     Where: The remote village of Gorlangbang is in the highest mountains of Sudan. They have no electricity, running water, or reliable phone reception. The only way to access the village is to drive five hours through multiple military checkpoints, followed by a three-hour donkey or camel trek up a mountain. The only doctor here, Doctor Gisma, was recruited by CARE. This is her story.   Three reasons I became a doctor     1. I think we need to help people everywhere.     “Because there is so much need here in this region, I wanted to help people, and so I was the first doctor to come here in over ten years. The clinic is open five days a week, and being the only doctor, I am always on call. For any emergency at night or on my days off, I still go and help.”     Doctor Giwa’s regular services   [✓]( Safe baby deliveries   [✓]( Immunizations for children   [✓]( Trauma and injury treatment   [✓]( Women's health services and contraceptives       2. Saving lives is a woman’s job.     “Not everyone in Sudan feels [women can and should be doctors]. Women here are more likely to have no education. They are expected to be in the home, not work outside in jobs like being a doctor or a teacher.”     "[As a doctor] I have saved the lives of many people and can help people in emergencies." [Doctor Giwa checking blood pressure of a patient](     3. The happiness of people makes me smile from my heart.     “Pain is the most difficult thing in life. I always feel the need to help people in pain. When I feel the people are happy, all my tiredness is gone by knowing people are healthy. [Here] I feel like I have become part of the community.”   [-----------------------------](   Doctor Giwa and the Gorlangbang health and nutrition clinic are supported by CARE donors. Because of you:   • Equipment, supplies, and medicines have been brought up the mountain to build up the clinic.   • We’ve trained and supported local health assistants, pharmacists, midwives, nutrition assistants, and community health volunteers.   • The only doctor in the clinic recruited by CARE, Doctor Giwa, is bringing healthcare to an entire village for the first time in 10 years.   [Thank You!](  [Facebook]( [Instagram]( [Twitter](   Text CARE to 227387 to receive SMS updates about your impact around the world.
