April 4, 2023 [View Online]( Good morning! Anyone with experience in the food service industry knows that surprise visits from the health inspector can be harrowing, but what if one of those inspectors showed up at your door? In Today’s Good Thing, find out how to do a health inspection of your own kitchen to determine whether it’s up to snuff. In Jillee’s Pick, you’ll find my review of a book based on a great true story, which centers on a 63-year-old woman doing what she wants (as all the best mature women do!) After a diagnosis that gave her two years to live, she set out with her dog and horse in an attempt to fulfill her lifelong goal of seeing the Pacific Ocean. With no money, Annie was entirely reliant on the kindness of strangers, and braved freezing temperatures, illness, dangerous highways, and many other challenges along the way. I’m just a year younger than Annie was when she embarked on this journey, so I couldn’t help imagining myself in Annie’s shoes while reading this book. I was astounded by her perseverance and inspired by her persistent belief in the goodness of people. In addition to having a compelling plot, this book is also incredibly well researched. The author artfully combines her narrative with historical context about mid-century America and background about the specific towns and cities Annie visited. I found it all fascinating, and thought it helped bring the story to life too. While I enjoyed this book overall, I do think the pacing was a bit uneven, as some parts felt overly long while others felt rushed. But with that being said, I’m glad I decided to branch out and give this book a chance, because Annie’s story is a moving reminder of what we can achieve when we set our minds and hearts to it.
