March 21, 2023 [View Online]( Good morning! Despite the two feet of snow in our backyard, it is officially springtime, and while I’d love to be gardening, it looks like I’ll be confined to spring cleaning for the foreseeable future! I’ve been taking note of the less obvious (though no less important) spring cleaning tasks I don’t want to forget, and I’m sharing 7 of them in Today’s Good Thing. In Jillee’s Pick, I’m sharing my thoughts on a novel that really puts the “historical” in historical fiction. Find out what sets this retelling of the tragedy of Pompeii apart below. Pompeii’s tragic fate has captured imaginations for centuries, including that of author Robert Harris. I don’t think I’m wrong in saying that Harris’s story is one of the more extraordinary takes on the well-known tale, nor that this novel exemplifies the best of historical fiction. Set prior to the fateful eruption in 79 AD, the story centers on Marcus Attilus Primus, a fictional aqueduct engineer employed by the Roman Empire. After the engineer assigned to the Aqua Augusta goes missing, Attilus takes on the task of fixing the troubled aqueduct, which supplies fresh water to Pompeii and several nearby towns. What he doesn’t know is that the source of the problems is the early stages of seismic activity leading up to a massive volcanic eruption. While the end of the story being set in stone (or ash, in this case) can hinder some “prequel” stories, I found this one to be utterly compelling, suspenseful, and satisfying. I'm very glad I picked up this book, because once I did, I couldn't put it down!
