March 13, 2023 [View Online]( Good morning! While many of the tips I share are inspired by messages I receive from readers, others I discover on my own by sheer luck. One of those lucky discoveries is the subject of Today’s Good Thing, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that it’s a game-changer for kitchen countertop organization! In Monday Motivation, we’re exploring the human tendency to dwell on negative emotions and thoughts. Find out how you can grow beyond that tendency—and how doing so can make you happier—below. I try not to take those too personally, but sometimes that’s easier said than done. Apparently, struggling to ignore negativity is something we all have in common. Brain scans show we react more strongly to negative stimuli than either positive or neutral stimuli, which may have given early humans an evolutionary advantage. (For our human ancestors, heightened sensitivity to potential threats would have increased their chances of survival.) While we no longer face the same existential threats as early humans, our brains haven’t gotten the memo. That negative bias continues to drive us to seek out and magnify negativity, including that one mean comment in a sea of kind, thoughtful words. Negative bias can make you miserable, but you don’t have to let it. If we don’t want to waste our time and energy dwelling on negativity, we have to choose to look for the good. When it feels like the universe is determined to bring you down, remind yourself to look for kindness, joy, and love, and you’re sure to find them.
