Back then, if you turned on the TV after midnight, you'd likely be greeted by a screen full of static. From the advent of broadcast television until the mid '80s or so, there was little incentive for TV stations to continue broadcasting after the bulk of their audience had gone to bed. So at the end of the night, each station concluded its broadcast with a “sign-off”, airing station information, disclaimers, or program ads before going dark. When I was growing up, some stations would play the national anthem before resolving into static or a test pattern. On the odd occasion when I would babysit for someone who stayed out past midnight, I was bored to tears once the TV stations signed off! These days, almost every TV station broadcasts 24/7, filling their overnight hours with an automated series of infomercials, newsfeeds, and other programming. TV sign-offs had their merits, but when I had our first baby (Erik) in 1989, I was grateful to have something to watch during those middle-of-the-night feedings!
