Heat Food More Evenly In Your Microwave [A photo of a plate of potatoes in a microwave.]( Mom may have told you not to play with your food, but this move is tactical. While I’m glad microwave ovens exist and I appreciate mine, it's hard to think of a more chaotic process for heating or reheating food. I’m not sure I fully understand how it all works, but what I do understand is that it’s next to impossible to heat food evenly in a microwave. Take Hot Pockets, for example—after the recommended time in the microwave, the ends are roughly the temperature of Earth’s core, while the center is somehow still shy of lukewarm. (I’m no expert, but my kids have subjected me to many variations of this rant over the years.) Luckily, there’s an easy way to avoid uneven heating, at least with foods other than Hot Pockets: arrange your food into the shape of a donut before microwaving it. Some areas may still come out a bit warmer than others, but the differences won’t be as drastic and you'll have a more pleasant eating experience.
