February 13, 2023 [View Online]( Good morning! For those of us who grew up before cell phones, let alone smartphones, our instinct to jot things down is understandable. But snapping a photo with your phone’s camera is often faster and more accurate, and you’ll find dozens of useful examples in Today’s Good Thing. In a new Monday Motivation, I’m exploring the hazards of letting your circumstances dictate your emotions. Discover a simple secret that can help you live more joyfully below. [Read more ➜]( MONDAY MOTIVATION Don’t Blame Your Circumstances More often than I’d care to admit (though I recognize I’m not alone in this), I end up blaming my own bad mood on external circumstances. Instead of acknowledging that my mood is a reflection of what I’m feeling inside, it’s easier to shift the blame elsewhere. Even if things are going well overall, I can end up feeling disappointed, sad, or resentful if a situation isn’t as satisfying or meaningful as I’d imagined it would be. It’s easy to buy into the idea that we’d be happy if only our circumstances were different. If we just had more money, a better job, a different body, more free time, less stress, fewer health issues—you get the idea—then we could live happily ever after. By putting your feelings at the mercy of your circumstances, you only succeed in making yourself miserable. Because in reality, feeling joy isn’t something you achieve when the conditions are just right—it’s a choice, and one that’s yours to make. This week, I’m encouraging all of us to remember that we can’t always control our circumstances, but we can control how we respond to them. Life will always be imperfect, but we can choose to live joyfully anyway.
