MONDAY MOTIVATION Keep Track Of Your Key Don’t put the key to your happiness in someone else’s pocket. As an emotionally sensitive person, I’ve always had a tendency to get swept up in strong emotions, regardless of whether or not they’re mine. So when I came across this saying about the “key to your happiness”, I realized how rarely I have mine in my own pocket. Empathy can be a great quality, but it can become a problem if you start allowing other people’s emotions to supersede your own. Over time, an overly empathetic person can lose touch with their own wants and needs, and end up wracked by anxiety and alienation. This “empathy trap” can be especially tricky to avoid with the people we love most. It's hard not to be affected when you see your partner or child in distress, but getting swept up in their fear, sadness, or anger only makes you both suffer. On the other hand, checking in with your own emotions when a loved one is in distress can help you be more present with them. Somewhat paradoxically, the more in tune you are with your own emotions, the better you can support someone struggling with theirs. So if you struggle with over-empathizing like I do, keep this lesson in mind. When someone else’s feelings start impacting your own, stop and ask yourself, “Who has my key right now?” Asking the question may be all it takes to return it to your own pocket.
