JILLEE'S PICK Mary Stewart’s Merlin Trilogy [An image showing the front cover of 'The Merlin Trilogy' by Mary Stewart.]( I don't read a lot of fantasy, but I do enjoy learning about myths and legends, and lately I've been interested in exploring Arthurian legend. After seeing [Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy]( on a few of the “best books of all time” lists I'd looked at, it seemed like a promising place to start. Consisting of The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, and The Last Enchantment, this trilogy tells the story of King Arthur from the perspective of the legendary wizard Merlin. As you can imagine, Arthur is usually the star of the show, so I really enjoyed that these books put Merlin’s story front and center. The Crystal Cave tells of Merlin’s youth in 5th-century Wales, and his journey from the bastard child of a Welsh princess to a promising young sorcerer. The Hollow Hills follow's Merlin's involvement in raising and teaching young Arthur Pendragon. The Last Enchantment picks up at the beginning of Arthur's reign and continues to Merlin's eventual “retirement” (AKA going off to live in a cave). Mary Stewart's masterful ability to blend history, myth, and imagination made this trilogy highly enjoyable from start to finish. I may not read a lot of fantasy, but I would recommend this trilogy to anyone who enjoys good storytelling! They’re available as separate books and as a 3-in-1 collection.
