Unless you've been living under a rock, or have somehow figured out how to avoid unwanted text messages entirely (if you have, I beg you to share it with me), chances are that you've been on the receiving end of at least one SMS-based phishing attempt. (As a quick phishing refresher, this practice involves scammers posing as trusted organizations to lure you into doing something they stand to gain from, like giving them access to personal information or downloading malware.) A lot of phishing takes place through email, but phishing via SMS—or “smishing”—is growing in popularity. In fact, smishing has overtaken robocalls as scammers' mobile tool of preference. These spam texts come in all shapes and sizes, from fake alerts about suspicious account activity to notifications that you've won a prize. The most common form of smishing centers around shipments or deliveries, and appear to be from Amazon, FedEx, or USPS. Fake delivery texts represented more than a quarter of all spam texts in 2021, [according to a RoboKiller report](. (I’m not surprised, since I’ve received several of these texts myself!) To avoid falling victim to smishing, don't click links in texts from unknown senders, and don't provide private information in response to unsolicited texts.
