But despite knowing we aren't perfect, we often try to hide or deny our imperfections, as though acknowledging them might diminish us in some irreversible way. Reflecting on the past can be instructive, but ruminating on your failures is something else entirely. Trying to trace a path you wish you hadn't taken back to its origin is like solving a maze from end to start—it can make all your wrong turns seem painfully obvious. But hindsight is 20/20, and we don't get do-overs. When I want nothing more than to bury my failings so deep that no one will ever find them, I remind myself that my imperfections and my strengths are both integral to my story. The journey that brought me here changed me for the better, but I wouldn't be able to appreciate that if I couldn't admit that I’ve always been flawed. So don’t waste time and energy wishing away your failures and mistakes. Integrate them into your story instead, and recognize how they've contributed to the incredible person you're becoming. In owning our strengths and flaws alike, we embrace our full humanity in a way that, with any luck, will inspire others to do the same.
