While the latest technology has enabled scammers to find footholds in the digital arena, that doesn’t mean there aren’t those who prefer to “keep it old school.” In fact, one classic form of fraud that is currently experiencing a resurgence is old fashioned mail theft. Even with today's online payment options, enough people still send checks in the mail to attract criminals' attention. Home mailboxes with raised flags make easy targets, because there's a decent chance that any outgoing mail will contain a personal check. Some criminals may attempt to steal mail through other means, such as “fishing” in mail collection boxes. Using a string or wire with something sticky on the end, a determined criminal can extract individual pieces of mail from the box in hopes of finding a check. Once a criminal has their hands on a personal check, they may attempt to “wash” it by using chemicals to remove the ink indicating the payee and amount. Successfully washed checks may be kept and used for their own gain, or sold for profit on the black market. To protect yourself from mail theft, take your outgoing mail into a post office to send it. (If you must use a collection box, try to deposit your mail close to the indicated pickup time.)
